What is Cystic Fibrosis?

Cystic Fibrosis is an inherited disorder which affects breathing, digestion, and reproduction in the body. This lifelong illness get more severe as life progresses in both male and females.  The average life expectancy is 35( it is different  in each case).

The glands which produce mucus and intestinal fluids do not work properly. People with Cystic Fibrosis have secretions which are thick and sticky rather than thin and watery. This interferes with the removal of dust and germs in the lungs and can cause respiratory problems, infections, and lung damage. The thick secretions may clog the pancreatic duct and block the transfer of enzymes that are needed in the intestine. The enzymes help to break down the food that is in the intestine to supply proper nutrients in the body. Males are usually infertile and females may experience reduced fertility due to secretions in the reproductive tract. The symptoms and severity of CF differ from person to person. The majority of patients have both respiratory and digestive problems, while some may have only respiratory symptoms. People with CF have normal intelligence and mental capacity.
