Creek Connections

Up Sample dates Special Projects Sampling

Creek Connections is a program in which students sample streams and conduct chemical and biological water quality tests. It is coordinated through Allegheny College. Schools throughout the French Creek and Allegheny River watersheds participate. The data are collected and displayed on a website and a symposium is held in April at which all the schools make presentations of their research results.

In the first two years that Parker Middle School students participated it was an extracurricular activity, and a limited number of students were able to participate. During the 1999-00 and 2000-01 school years the project was done within the curriculum. Each class of students was divided into three teams, and each team samples a different stream close to the school. Adult volunteers accompanied two of the groups while the classroom teacher took the third group in a van.

Due to schedule changes in the 2001- 2002 school year, Creek Connections was again done as an extra curricular activity on Saturday mornings from 10 am to 12 noon.

Again in the 2002-2003 school year the project will be  done within the curriculum. Each class of students will be divided into three teams, and each team samples a different stream close to the school. Adult volunteers accompany two of the groups while the classroom teacher takes the third group in a van. Sampling will be done on Thursdays and the completion of the chemical analysis will be completed on Fridays.
