Technique
Colors and supplies by: General Directions: Begin with properly cleaned and fired 06 bisque. Thin down White and apply over entire piece to get into all detail. When dry, apply another smooth coat of undiluted White. Allow to dry. Apply Hyacinth Blue in small areas wiping back for highlights until entire piece is covered. Dampen a soft cloth with Solvent to wipe back further highlights and an overall even look to antiquing. Spray with Porcelain Mist to set TL. Reminder: In this technique, sometimes more than 1 coat of TL is necessary so between each coat, the color must be sprayed in order not to lift the first layer. Refer to photo for color placements in various sections. Technique 1. Apply Black TL to the cobblestones, sidewalk, pump base, tire stack, oil can stack and back roof. Wipe back leaving a little extra on tire stack; spray. 2. For the cobblestones, randomly drybrush a few stones with Mink, Light Gray and Brick Red. Lightly highlight with Light Gray. Drybrush Medium Gray over the sidewalk and pump base to even out the look. Tip into White to highlight. 3. Use 2 coats of Antique Ivory for the back garage block, trim around windows and doors, trim block under main sign and oil can rack by pumps. Spray. Lightly drybrush Brightest Yellow. 4. Apply 2 coats of Tangelo to the 50 gal drum, alternating stripes of awnings, wiper bin, detail of doors and pump tops. Spray. Drybrush Orange then tip into Brightest Yellow to highlight. 5. For the garage doors, pump tops and main sign trim; apply 3 coats of White Cloud. Spray. If needed, even out by drybrushing White. 6. Apply 2 coats of Red Maple to the roof and brick of main building. Spray. Even out tone by drybrushing Brick Red. For the roof only, drybrush highlights with Orange; tip into Brightest Yellow to lightly highlight then into White for that added sparkle. 7. Use 2 coats of Hyacinth Blue for the remaining stripes of awnings, doors, window frames, pump bodies and oil stack base. Spray. Drybrush pump bodies, awning stripes and oil stack base Rich Blue; tip into White to highlight. 8. Paint pump hoses, door knobs and pump fronts Flat Black. Lightly highlight/ detail with White. Heavily drybrush oil can stack with Shimmering Silver. Paint stripe Orange. Paint the pump nozzles, wiper bin front and drum spout Shimmering Silver. 9. For the main sign, apply 2 coats of Hyacinth Blue gently wiping out the center area both times. Spray. For the color bands of the letters, paint with Brightest Yellow. On the areas that appear to be lower, paint with Orange fading into the yellow about half way of each band. Come back with Brightest Yellow and fade out over the orange; this will fade the yellow into orange.

With a liner brush, paint the lettering Flat Black and outline the color
bands. Clean up any letters as needed. When dry, lightly drybrush White to the
center of sign fading out to the edges. White will hit the higher parts of the
color bands and soften the transition of color from yellow to orange. |
