The town cooper made barrels, buckets, and tubs. He had one of the busiest occupations in the village because almost everything was stored in barrels. Liquids were all stored in watertight barrels, and even eggs were kept in barrels, packed in oatmeal to keep them from breaking. Tubs, barrels, and buckets were all made in the same way, except that the wood planks used for tubs and buckets were narrower at the bottom so that the tops would flare out. To make a barrel,
the cooper first bought planks of wood from the sawmill. He then planed the
planks into perfect shapes so that they would fit tightly when pulled together.
He formed the barrel's shape by making the tops and bottoms of the planks
narrower, and the middle of the planks, the widest point. He then stood the
barrels upright, and held the planks together with a temporary wooden hoop. A
cord was wrapped around the top of the barrel, which cinched the planks inward.
Then, the cooper put permanent hoops around the top, middle, and bottom of the
barrel. He either made these hoops from wood, or the blacksmith made them from
metal.
