Article Features Daun Battersby
aun was only four years old when his father died and left Mrs. Battersby to raise seven sons and one daughter. Raising eight children was difficult in the 1940s, but it brought Dauns family closer together. Daun was the youngest son. Three of the sons, including Daun would become chiropractic physicians.
Daun Battersby
Daun went to a two room grade school in North Springfield. At North Springfield High there were so few boys that they had to get girls to play on their baseball team. In high school, Daun moved to Albian and lettered in basketball and football.
When Daun's brother opened a chiropractic office on East Sixth Street, Daun and his mother and his baby sister moved in to Erie and Daun went to East high for his senior year and worked at this brothers office after school. Later while working at Hayes Manufacturing in his senior year, he met Jane, who was attending Tech High School. (Continued on Page 2.)
Battersby... (Continued from page 1.)
Daun said, "We met at a drinking fountain one day. Daun asked her to go out on a date. They were married in 1955.
When Daun was asked why he went into chiropractics he said, "When I was a young boy I had difficulty learning in school, and I had dyslexia and was unable to learn how to read. I even had to repeat first grade. My mother took me to a chiropractic physician." After several treatments Daun began to learn how to read.
"I was only seven years old, but I decided then that when I grew up I would be a chiropractor."
When Daun finished his pre-med at Gannon College he went to The National Chiropractor College in Chicago. He graduated in 1959 and moved to Phoenix. Daun explained, "At that time Arizona required all chiropractic physicians and medical doctors to pass the same comprehensive medical and science board examinations. He passed both of the boards and was licensed to practice chiropractics in Arizona.
In 1959 Daun started the Battersby Chiropractic Center. In 1973 he started a practice in Payson, Arizona, located in the cool pines. He has served on the Arizona Board of Chiropractic Examiners. Jane said, "He has been very succful as a physician. He has a very large practice and his patiens love him dearly. He has time for Elks and is an avid golfer. He also enjoys fishing up in the high country."
Daun and Jane had four sons. Daun said, "No one in life is immuned to tragedy. We lost our son when he was twenty-four years old. One of our sons is a chiropractor, and one is a chef. Our youngest is still a college student."
The Battersby's live in Scottsdale, but enjoy their summer home in cool Payson. They also have a cabin in Forest Lakes, Arizona.
Jane explained, "Daun always has a dream in the making. I love it! His next project is to purchase Castle Hot Springs, an old Spanish style hotel that served wealthy families back in the 30's. Recently there have been several movies made there and it is frequented by celebrities when they need to retreat from their hectic lifestyles."
When Daun was asked what he enjoys doing, he said, "I enjoy helping people who are in a life threatening experience." He had a coy, impish grin on his face. "Thirty years ago I started treating a woman named Sarah who was severly ill and was dying. She is now 101 years old, and she comes in weekly for treatments. We sometimes go out to lunch together and she orders a hearty steak."
When asked what life has taught him he said, "I have found that work can be as much fun as play."

Drivers Education was special. I remember once while I was driving,Mr. Pomeroy, had me stop on East Lake Road. There was a car coming slowly and Mr. Pomeroy said, "Ill bet you cant beat that car coming. I said,"Oh, I bet I can." I put my foot on the gas and all of a sudden the car seemed to roar and the clutch was going up and down. I took my hands and feet off of everything and the car stalled. Mr. Pomeroy said I lost and then lectured us on never taking dares while driving. Thank goodness he had floor controls too. I never enjoyed driving and only did drive when I had to. Today I dont even own a car, but continue to renew my license just in case.
I think my job as a secretary in an insurance adjusting office affects my being such a defensive driver as I type up accident reports every day.v

A Special Thank You
Dee
Dee Juchno Sibs, you are one really special person. You saved all those wonderful clippings from the Tom Tom and the Erie Times. You, Dot Kupniewski, Olga Tupitza, Dot Niewinny, and Joan Krusiewicz did a great job as class historians and capturing the golden years of the early 50's. You are indeed Warriors of the highest kind.
I have Xeroxed over 50 pages of marvelous articles. They were written at the moment of the time when we were all so young and seem as alive today as the day they were written. Thanks.v

I Just want to let you know that the newsletter and your commitment to it are great! I appreciate your hard work and heavy investment of time.
It was interesting to see the article on Donna Dembaugh, which brought back lots of memories. I stood up for her way back when she got married, and I have kept in touch with her over the years.. One of these days I will get up to Lake Placid for a visit.
Currently my husband and I are on our way to Erie to celebrate my mother's 85th birthday, and help her pack to finally move to Florida for good. My father, who I believe attended one of our reunions over the years, died in 1985.
I will be attending our 45th Reunion even though my family ties in Erie will no longer be there. Life is change, and I guess this is another chapter in the book.
In closing, I would think that the newsletter is going to help the next reunion be a more connected, intimate affair.

Dan
All through high school I kept a scrapbook for myself report cards, all of my dates, from the newspaper pitcutes of our football team, basketball team, water polo chaps, teen etiquette. I clipped out 9 pictures of 20 classmates looking into different types of work and professions. I also have the dates, places of our class picnic, class banquet, senior prom, etc.
The pages are brittle and the clippings pastedsome loose.
Let me know if and when you would like some information.
Marion Fabian Wisniewski
Dear Marion,
I would love your material. I can photostat them like I did with clippings from Dee Juchno. Thank goodness someone had the foresight to keep those precious memoirs.
Dan.
1Dear Chooch,
You dirty rat! When you asked me to write and tell you things I remembered about the football game with Academy, I thought you were going to re-write and edit it and write a column or something. I never dreamed you were going to quote me about looking up the girl's dresses from the orchestra pit. You have, with one bold stroke of your pen, alienated me from every twirler and cheerleader in our senior class. Perhaps this was your purpose so you could have them all to yourself. On the other hand, you may have overplayed you hand. At the age we have all reached, just perhaps some of those girls will have fond memories of the days when the boys tried to sneak a peek up their costumes. I may, in fact, in their minds, be a stud and at our fiftieth reunion they may fall all over me. (If I am still standing by that time) we shall see.
You do a great job, Chooch. I particularly like the piece on Dick Petit. The old boy has done well in life. I have recently (May 1st) retired from the Lottery and when I settle down a bit I am going to write a funny incident about Dick and send it to you. You may have been there when it happened but It was so may years ago I have forgotten just who was there.
Well old friend, keep up the good work.
Best Regards,
George Hahn, Oakhurst, CA.
Dear George,
I am curious about what incident you refer to about Dick Petit. Is it the one about when he took two different girls to the same prom and never got caught? Or is it the one when he and I were on Tenth and State hand-signing to each other as though we were deaf and an elderly deaf man came up to Dick and started to talk to him in sign language? Or was it the time when we were having a night jam session on Presque Isle and a girl vacationing from Sharon was really infatuated with him. I explained loudly that Dick was deaf. After a long walk down the moonlighted beach that evening, she poured her heart out about how gorgeous she thought he was. I could never believe that Dick could remain speechless for more than a few moments. When they returned and the girl was ready to leave, Dick said in a loud voice, "Hey, thanks for the long walk." She cried hysterically all the way to her car.
Or was it the time??? Oh, forget it George. There were just too many stories. I await your article on Dick. I rarely re-write material sent to me, so take full editorial privilege. The WARRIOR '52 is quickly being compared with Esquire Magazine.

Dan, thank you for sending me the video of the 40th Reunion. It is beautiful. You have done a lot to keep all of us together and informed. Again, thanks. See you at the 45th, God willing.
Pauline Lipchik Berti, Erie PA
Pauline,
This summer I was invited to attend the 40th Reunion for the Class of '54. I video taped an individual interview with over 40 classmates. They talked about old beaus, things they did and never got caught, and about what they have been doing since high school. Possibly we can do the same at our 45th. We might even take individual photographs and put them in our new directory next to our graduation photograph.

...From Miss Rybinski
Dear Dan
I was pleasantly surprised to receive from you your interesting letter
and the copies of the WARRIOR 52. It brought back to me memories of the great days
we had at our dear East High. I enjoyed immensely to see and read about so many of our
1952 graduates and their school activities.
I was especially pleased to notice the Ph. D.with your name. My congratulations on attaining such high honor. I remember you and I likewise recall your sister, Shirley. I wonder where she is now.
I notice that the return address on your envelope in Arizona. Is that where your reside now? And what is your line of occupation?
I feel honored that you would like to write an article on me. But, Dan, as much as I appreciate it and could enjoy it, I would rather deny myself that pleasure. I am satisfied that my students remember me and if they continue to carry out what we encouraged them to be and do, that will be my greatest satisfaction.
May God bless you and keep you in His care.
Sincerely Cecilia Rybinski
Dear Miss. Rybinski,
I am so pleased that you enjoyed the WARRIOR 52. I agree with you that it is nice to find out what old class mates have done.
I received my Ph. D. in clinical psychology a few years back. I have
been in private practice for the past 20 years. My sister Shirley (50) has continued
to work for Melon Bank in Erie since graduating from E
EHS.
I respect your wish that you prefer not to have an article written about you. However, the next edition of The Warrior 54 will be dedicated to you.
We all love you and appreciate your dedication to all of us throughout your wonderful career as an educator.

I want to thank you very much for sending me a copy of the summer issue of WARRIOR 54. I surely enjoyed reading about all the histories of the East High graduates.
Likewise I appreciate that you dedicated the issue to me and also the article you had about my years at East (WARRIOR 54). I enjoyed reading about the duet of Miss King and of me during the change of classes. We often would sing our old favorite Now is the Hour. What pleasant memories!
May God continue to bless you in your noble project. The idea of a class newsletter is wonderful.

...from Dottie Kuhar
Dear Danny
The Alumni Newsletter is one of the highlights of my day. It gives me a chance to relive all those precious , wonderful innocent days of our youth. Such outstanding classmates who were a best pal in Shorthand , or had such fun with in Office Practice. I can still picture the fun hin Miss Beahens English class and Miss Davies Civics class. I could go on and on.
How could anyone combine fun and enjoyment spending time at the library searching material for that 1000 word essay, but through the eyes and determination of youth. Of course the penalty is not getting an A also.
I worked for an Erie Attorney when I graduated and at the Hammermill Paper Company until I married. Reality sets in somewhere and the most serious part of life begins. My claim to fame, I guess, is raising four of the most wonderful children to adulthood.
I keep busy, when I want, working with the Kelly Girls temporary agency and enjoy that very much, working in so many different environment and also meeting many interesting people.
I hope this little chat can take the place of mingling in those great halls of East High.

---Susan Myers Travel: Ralph and I lived in Puerto Rico from 1981 to 1984. Ralph was a a senior partner of the San Juan Office of Main Hurdman, CPA's. It was quite an experience and a fun time for me. It was like a three year vacation!
Kermit Hultberg said, "If you are talking about favorite places to travel, consider Nag's Head, Outerbanks North Carolina. My wife and I went their with some friends in September. It was great to just relax, enjoy the ocean fishing, and spending time with our friends. It was great!"
Mike and Jo Ann Lepkowski went to Spain and Portugal in June, 1993. Mike and Jo Ann saw Pope John XXIII when he dedicated a new Basilica in Madrid. While in Madrid they went to the Prado Museum. When they went to Portugal they went to the Fatima Shrine. The return ride on the Eurotrain back from Portugal to Madrid was a beautiful scenic ride?"
Mavra Simon Piano
One of the most enjoyable vacations we had was when my husband Richard and I went from Seattle back to our home in Philadelphia. It was special for two reasons. First, out son was getting married in Seattle. The other was my long fascination and interest in geography. It gave me the chance to see only what before I had read about or imagined. The people and the landscape of Montana won my heart. We camped on this tripstopping at motels about every third or fourth day for showers and laundry. It is a large country and most beautiful.
Pat Macosko Oatman
Bill and I joined another couple to go on a cruise of the Greek Island and port of call. We visited Crete,Mykonos, Potmos, Rhodes, and Santorini.
I had always wanted to visitn the islands and it was great tofinally get there. We also stopped to visit Turkey from Athensthe trip lasted three weeks. It was great!

Every year for the last eight years, Ruthie Staynoff De Michele and my husband Chuck and I go to Las Vegas, Nevada. Although Tessie Mando Fischer died in 1989, we still visit Tom and his his family.
Bob Miller
I really enjoy camping and out of door activities. One of my favorite places is in the Olympic areas of Lake Placid in New England. In 1989 I organized a trip with six boys and two girls to climb to the top of Cannon Mountain in northern New Hampshire. In the photograph, we are just below the tree line at 4300 feet. It is great to watch the eyes of young people popping out of their heads at the new sights. I have been to Lake Placid seven times now, and I never tire of the scenery.
Olga Tupitza Pakela
Several years ago we went to Cape May in New Jersey and Cape Cod in Massachusetts. We went with my daughter Natalie and her family (two wonderful grandchildren). We rent a large home on the beach, annually. We love the whale watching, swimming, visiting points of interest and just hanging out.
Rev. Bill Oesterlin, from Ligioner, PA went to Hungary, Slovakia, Czech Republic, and Vienna. Bill said, "We had a marvelous time, and I would recommend it for all."
Mary Lill Gardner Colvins husband gave her a day and a half notice get ready to celebrate their third wedding anniversary. They spent last Christmas/New Year's holiday season in Athens, Greece and Istanbul, Turkey.

WARRIOR to Begin
ItsThird Year
Ed..
Time goes by quickly when you are facing deadlines. The WARRIOR 52 is going into its third year of publication. Without the cooperation of the Class of 52, it would not be possible to have a newsletter. Without classmates like Marion Fabin, Olga Tupitza, Dee Jucho, George Hahn, Jerry Hopkins, Mary Lill Gardner, and a lot of other helpful people, it would be hard to get a newsletter published.
We have finally run the full course of writing brief articles about all of our classmates. From now on we will be having a different format, putting some focus on what all of us are doing now that we are in our retirement years.
We will continue to do a feature article on a classmate each issue. If you have an idea of someone you would like to name for the feature article, just write me a short note. I will make arrangements to get an article written.
We have a new face on our newsletter. I have recently acquired Microsoft Publisher which makes for a very profession newsletter.
Since we have established a subscription fee of $15 we have continued to remain financially solventnot rich, but solvent. There were only a few classmates that did not order a WARRIOR. Over 80% of our graduating class are subscribers.
Have a very safe and enjoyable holiday.
