New East High Ahead of Construction Schedule The construction of the new high school may be completed ahead of the time projected. Although school officials anticipated a move in of the school to be early 1999, it may be likely that students will start moving into the new school as early as the Christmas recess. The main entrance to the school will be on Atkins Street between East Avenue and Pennsylvania Avenue. An overhead breeze way will span Pennsylvania Avenue and bridge the east and west buildings. An entrance to the school will be on East Avenue. No time has been identified yet as to when the existing structure will be leveled. A number of items from the "old" school will be a part of the "new" school. A number of the tiled drinking fountains will be dismantled and placed in the new facility. "Shoot out" at the Old High SchoolBy Dan Conley
Lunch at the Beaner Restaurant on Perry Square seems to be the real "in" thing to do these days. Never quite know who you might run into there.
Last week Don DiPaolo (54) and Tom Damico (52) and I met there for lunch before our scheduled PHOTO "Shoot Out" at East High. I had not seen Don in the past 45 years. Don is still very handsome, more distinguished now, and one of the most available bachelors in the Class of 54. He lives in Buffalo, but was happy to join in taking some of the final pictures of East High before it is torn down.
A group of us Warriors, about 30 or more, stay in contact with each other via the internet and E-Mail. Several old classmates gave us suggestions of what to photograph. Don graciously accepted the job of consolidating Email WARRIOR addresses that is quickly reaching about 35 names.
Don and I got to East just before 3 oclock and it was nice to see students walking the halls and going from class to class. Ms. Jackson, the principal, gave us permission to photograph whatever we wished and so we went un-escorted through the halls of the "Grand Old Lady".
We were impressed with the stark reality that some things have not changed in the school over the past 45 years. The original black and white tile floor in the cafeteria remains. The worn footsteps of many of our greatest Warriors have dropped cold hot dogs and spilled milk cartons on those tiles. They have survived the tests of time.
The kitchen has had virtually no changes. The serving lines are the same. The large stoves and ovens look today, exactly what they looked like years ago when we sat at the large wooden tables chatting with our best friends and classmates at lunch.
We walked down the hall to the Woodshop and talked to Mr. Loder and two of his students (females). Girls taking woodshop? Now that is new! But, the wood shop is exactly the same. Not one new thing, except for some electric wood tools. It was as though someone closed the moment Don and I walked into the wood shop.
As we walked by the cafeteria we noticed that the seniors today have their own outside patio tables. There is privacy and it is a privilege to sit there. When we were seniors, we had priority and privileged front center seats in the auditorium.
When we strolled into the auditorium we met Mr. Fatica. He was putting away some of the broadcasting equipment. He explained that the new school will have a radio and television broadcasting station.
Several other teachers came by and suggested that we go to the new school. Much of the school is already completed and it is now safe to go into the buildings (with permission). We explained that we were more interested in the "Old" building. They looked puzzled. They probably thought, "Why would anyone be interested in an aging old building structure? After all, just a few steps away was a modern edifice which is not only artistically esthetic, but clean and brand new as well.
Strange how quickly we can remember teachers just by walking by a classroom. One look on the room number 104 instantly brought back the face of Miss Piotrowski.
Don and I headed to the gym/auditorium. The curtains were opened and we watched some students participating in playing basketball. Both girls and boys were in the same class. Wellthat is new, isnt it?
After class we walked with the PE teacher, Mr. Koval. We asked if we could see the pool. One glance and it instantly brought back a flood of memories. The pool is just the same. Only a new coat of pale yellow paint hides the cracking of the walls. I never realized how high the balcony was. Lucky none of us ever fell off of it while watching the water polo games. The PE coach said schools in Erie have not played water polo in years. Mr. Koval was Pat Harts replacement when Pat retired from East.
We finally ended up in the old gym where the Noon Day Dances were held. I pushed on the door to the gym. I heard it creak and thought I remembered how it did that years ago. The door opened and there it was.
In my mind I could hear the soft lyrics of Nat King Coles latest 45 rpm of Tenderly. I saw the girls in their long skirts, saddle shoes, and white socks. As the girls danced I could hear the wispy sound of the crinolines that the girls wore then. The wooden floor has been replaced, but the four ropes that we had to climb by hand were still securely fastened to the ceiling. The ropes were tied to the same old wooden bar on the wall. I looked closely at the ropes. Yes, they were the same ropes that I pulled myself up 45 years ago in PE class. I could hear Duke Detzel yelling, "Pull harder Conley. Get the lead out!" Don asked me what I was smiling about, and I said, "Don, I couldnt climb them then, and I doubt if I could climb them now."
"Dan, it was easy." Don said. "Sure," I replied, "For you jocks!" We broke out laughing.
Don had to get back to Buffalo. We were both satisfied with the photos we got. Thinking that it looked like it might start raining, Don asked if I needed a ride home. I explained that I only lived two blocks away from East, and I preferred to walk.
As Don drove off down Atkins Street I looked once more at the Elegant Old Lady, standing bold and beautiful, warmed by the late afternoon sun. For the very first time I realized, that soon she would stand no more. There would be no physical reminder of the history of the many students that sat in her bosom, learning what was needed to know in order to continue our individual journeys through life.
Standing next to the old high school, I reached out and gently touched her and whispered softly, "I will really miss you when you are gone." Like the soft-hearted, sentimental wimp that I am, I felt a wet tear roll down and kiss my cheek. I looked up. A tear? A raindrop? And just for a momentjust a fleeting moment, I thought, the tear drop did not belong to me or the sky but, dropped by the "lovely lady" I will forever adore.

Overcoming Homesickness
By Mary Ann Dietz Gardner (53)
Bradenton, FL
"My husband Chuck and I have been in Florida now for 2 ½ years and we have finally finished all of our remodeling. I have over come my home sickness. I still miss Erie, my family and friends, but I can really say I am at home here in Bradenton.
We usually go north every summer to see the children and grandchildren, but this summer we are going to let them come to visit us. We plan on going to Erie for my 45th reunion and visit my brothers and sisters. In September we plan on a Bermuda trip with our golfing friends from Erie and Jamestown, N. Y.
I would love to say hello to Carl Whitehavent heard from him or seen him at any class reunions. I remember all of the fun times we used to have at Ma Whites home.
I would like to applaud Dan Conley for what he does for our class, even though he is not from the Class of 53. He does a great job with the newsletter, and its the next best thing to a class reunion. I am sending a photo of our Color Guards (Connie Alacce, Marilyn Petit, Mary Ann Dietz, and Bea Ertl) g

Jims Big Ketch
By Dan Conley

(Taken from the Wisconsin State Journal)
In August many out of town members of the Class of 1953 will be returning to Erie for their 45th High School Reunion. Many will drive, and some will fly. Jim Peters started his journey to the reunion in January, 1984. He was only 48 years old at the time.
His dream was to build a 45 foot sailboat to sail to Erie for his reunion. He will sail from Wisconsin, coming down the Great Lakes and arrive in Erie on July 29, 1998.
Jim said, "As a child I used to go fishing with my father on Lake Erie. We would be sitting there, anchored and the sailboats would go by. It was fascinating to me. I used to hang around the docks, hoping someone would take me for a sailboat ride, but nobody ever did. It became a dream that someday Im going to build a nice sailboat."
The trip to Erie is going to be a long one. Although it is a 570 mile trip by inland road, the water trip down the Great Lakes will be about a 1000 mile trip.
Plans are underway for some of the news media to greet Jim and his wife Susan when they pull into Dobbins Landing on July 29.

My current hobbies are fishing, boating, and hunting. I worked as a machine operator assembler until I retired. Lois and I have nine kidyes I said nine kids. We have seven grandkids. I really enjoyed myself in high school. I particularly enjoyed watching the cheerleaders and twirlers. Also liked going to the Noon Dances, participating in sports, going to the St. Marys Dances, and being with my best friendsArt Bierzonski, Steve Kowalczyk, and Mary Ann Osiecki. Duke Detzel was my favorite teacher. I loved my father, but Duke was Great!
So what have I been doing lately? Well, the same old garbage, just different flies. I saw Golfie last summer and would like to see him again. I really admire what he has done with his life, especially his career."
Helen Dworakowski Tonty (54)
4206 Rice Avenue
Erie, PA 16510
Helen continues to live in Erie. She is a widow. She has twins, a son and daughter and has two grandchildren. "I have enjoyed traveling and visiting my children and grandchildren. This April I went to Spain and France with my daughter Pamela.
I was a secretary and receptionist at General Electric and Greensheet, Inc. I am now retired.
I enjoyed my time at East High, especially the choir, working on the Tom Tom, and Home Ec. My best friend at East was Pat Edinger. My favorite teacher was Miss Putnam because she was a very dedicated teacher.
This spring I particularly enjoyed travelling through Spain and France. My daughter, who teaches Spanish at Mercyhurst Prep, speaks Spanish, so we had a delightful time in our travels.
Grace Kisielewski Horton (53)

"I enjoy my crafts, traveling, knitting, crocheting, and gardening. This summer I will be traveling to Seattle, Washington. I am retired now and widowed. I worked as a clerk in printing for 31 years at GE before I retired. I have one daughter and four grand children. In school I enjoyed choir, Noon Day Dances, proms, and the dances at St. Marys.
My best friends in school were Natalie Gorchinsky, Loretta Trojan, and Marge Trott. Miss King was my home room teacher and she was really nice. I would guess that my best friend in high school would have described me as quiet.
I have been retired for 3 years now. Been very busy with travel, taking care of aged mother. Have 4 grandchildren, so I have been baby sitting. Have a house to keep up, yard work, winters and summer either shoveling or mowing. Enjoy books, crafts and crocheting while watching TV. Have sung in St. Jude Choir (which I am a member of the church) since 1974. We have recorded 2 CDs and tapes. Our choir is pretty good.

"My husband Charles and I are involved playing golf, traveling, reading and being with our family. We have traveled a lot in the US, and will be in Alaska this month! We hope to get to the Yukon. We are making plans for a tour to New Zealand and Australia.
got my degree from Gannon in Sociology in 1982. I am a registered nurse (case manager) and worked at the Health South Great Lakes Rehabilitation Hospital until I retired. Charles and I have one daughter and one son (deceased) and two grandchildren. All together we have 4 stepchildren and 5 step grandchildren.
What did I enjoy doing at East? Well, the Sadie Hawkins Dance, Eastcapades, and Noon Day Dances were super. In high school, Helen Schrode, Pat Tomlin, Barb Shrere, and Marie Leonard Carroll were my best friends. Best teacher was Mrs. Milloy. She was fair, very intelligent, and relayed her subject matter well.
I retired as Director of Case Management at Health South Great Lakes Rehab Hospital in May, 1997. I am married to an old friend who I met when we were both 19. We married last year (May, 1997).
I spend lots of time with my daughter, grandchildren and enjoying the new extended family. I finally learned to play golf. Am Wintering JanuaryMarch in Clearwater, Florida. After our Alaskan cruise, we plan to continue travel and to enjoy our retirement. These truly are the golden years for me. I am enclosing a photo of Helen Schrode Feick and myself taken September 1996. We have continued being best friends since high school and we have continued our friendship thru the years and over the miles that separated us.

I worked as a papermaker in stores at Hammermill Paper Company until I retired (disability). During my 11th and 12th grades at East, I lived on the West side of Erie, but still had lots of friends at East. Joe Christoff was my favorite teacher. He loved to talk about sports. I would guess that my close friends would have described me in high school as being QUIET.
I wonder, does anyone remember the fun we use to have at ASTEC on Saturday nights? Also enjoyed St. Marys Dances, woodworking shop, Class Day, and of courseSPORTS. Those were the good old days, werent they?

A Little Humor

By Ding Bartos (51)
Seeing how Dan Conley says we get so few items from the Class of 51 with some humor in them, try this on ..(Im starting this at 3:30 p.m. and no beer yet.)
NicknamesSteve Kowalcyzk, Chuck Harrington and myself. Outside Mr. Jordans wood working shop and we are discussing nicknames. We couldnt go through EHS as Don, Steve, and Chuck. I dont remember who thought it up, but I was Ding, Chuck was Dong, and Steve was PPHFFT.
We tried it out around the class and it was working for awhile. Dong became Chuck again and PPHFFT became Steffy, or "Steffcha" thanks to, I think Happy Bottom (Gladys Leshko) For some reason, who knows why, I am and still Ding-Dingy and I love it.
Chuck Harrington is the only person besides my sister who calls me Donny. Chuck eventually became Hairs. Corky Pietrzak says it was because Chuck was voted the senior to have the nicest hair in the Class of 51. Sylvia Emling was voted the girl with the most beautiful hair.
In our junior year Chuck had some serious surgery. When he was released from the hospital, Steve had a small party for him at his apartment. When Chuck and Maryann walked in, a friend yelled "Welcome home hairless Charlie." Hairs STUCK.
Happy Bottom was the name Shirley Chessario gave to Gladys Leshko (Shimek). Someday you can ask Gladys if I can tell that story or maybe she will tell you.
Well, I am going to have a beer now and watch Bugs Bunny. Continue this later someday.

Did you ever ..
By Ron Bonaminio (57)
Did you ever climb up the crawl and walk on the concrete wall along the alley way next to the East High playing field? It ran from Pennsylvania Avenue up to Brandes. Or
Did you ever turn on the steam in Sara Spetzs green house and fog the place up?
Or ride your bike to school and park it in the bike racknear Mr. Grignols home room. And did you ever wonder if Ms. Laffey and Mr. Arrowsmith really had something going on?
Ever play in Crains Woods (Now known as the East Erie Plaza.) Were you one of the lucky ones who got a free ice cream cone when Borne's Ice Cream Parlor opened there?
Did you attend any of the old bon fire rallies in the field between East Avenue and Pennsylvania Avenue to Atkins. Or did you ever wonder if something died in the Track and Field locker room? It was the home of the "oldy moldies". And did you ever skate on the pond at the foot of Queen Street after the fire department flooded the pond? Maybe you participated in the Summer Recreation Program at Wayne School.
Did you ever stand on the bridge behind the Soldier and Sailors home in the winter time and drop large snow balls into the stacks of the old switch engines that hustled around the yard at Dock Junction? If you did, you probably visited the pigs and horses down behind the S&S Home. If that was your hang-out, you probably rode your sled down the hills behind the Block
Did you ever skate down there? Get stuck in the muck next to the pier? See the Wolverine while it was still in Misery Bay out at the peninsula?
Did you ever ride the Ravine Flyer at Waldameer? Or see the soap box derby races down State Street? Remember Victory Day after W.W.II? A boy on his bike was killed by a car at Perry Square that evening. Perry Square was like New Years at Times Square in New York? (Not Times Square Motors on West 10th Street.)
Did you ever play in the pit at the Dunn Brick Yard? Climb in a gondola there? Get close to the kilns that fired up and cured the bricks? Sit on the steps that went down off the McBride Viaduct and watch the sleek Niagras and Mohawks and famous Hudsons fly by with their freight and passengers.
Ever sit on one of the cannons at Lake Side Cemetery? Have an Eskimo Pie from Gem City Ice Cream? Or look at the Easter display in the windows of Chaconas or Pulakos Candies, and go by GE and hear the cannons they used to test after manufacturing them back during the War? There are so many memories of things we have done. Lots and lots of memories ..
(end).
Thanks Ron
By the editor
Ron Bonaminio (Class of 1957) is one of the many East High Alumni on the growing list of WARRIOR E-mail Directory.
When I read his letter "Did You Ever?" I knew I wanted to publish it in our newsletter. I am sure it will bring back lots of memories. It did for me. This is the e-mail I sent to him.
"Dear Ron,
I remember riding my sled down "Devils Backbone" at the foot of Light House Street. The war was going on and gasoline rations left the streets almost car-less and open territory for kids on sleds.
I wondered if anyone remembered exploring through the concrete tunnels at the end of French Creek near Glenwood that emptied into the storm drains. And yes, I remember VE Day and riding my bike with an American flag on the handle bars.
Even remember coming home from the Avenue Theatre on Sunday on December 7, 1941 and found my mother crying because she said we were going to go to war. I remember my father saying that the war would only last for two weeks, one month at the latest. (I probably inherited my prognostic skills from my father.)
Seems only a vague memory, but it seems to me that one day, in the middle of the day, the sky became dark. So dark, the street lights came on. I dont remember the news papers explaining what happened or why the sky became dark.
Not all memories are pleasant. I remember the day that Jimmy Shaw lost both of his legs jumping off a moving boxcar. I had done it a hundred times before, but to this day, I have never jumped on a moving train since.
But one of my fondest memories is one you mentioned about the cement wall in the alley at East High. I remember after years of frustration and failures to climb the wall, one day I jumped up, gripped the cement wall, pulled hard, and felt my body catapult to the top of the wall. I had reached a benchmark on my way to maturity. I had scaled the tall East High alley wall.
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
From Mavra Simon Iano (52)
I am sending some photos taken the day after our reunion banquet.
Question? I dropped a line to Donna Dembaugh Ticknor (52) at holiday time. The letter came back stamped Forward Order Expired. I used the Florida address in the now current directory. If you have her new address, I would much appreciate it. Thanks in advance.
It was wonderful to see you again and to be greeted so warmly after all those years. You and Ruth Staynoff were the first two people I saw after my husband and I walked through the door at the 45th Reunion last summer. The warmth from both of you banished any nervousness I had. Now I am looking forward to touching base with people whenever I make trips to Erie to visit family and the next reunion.
Do I read you correctly? "...you, a resident of Erie?" Any connection remaining in Arizona? Also I believe I saw some reference to Costa Rica. You are a man with well used travel bags!
The video you were making at the reunionanything usable? Availability? No doubt Ill hear in the next Warrior.
Warmest regards,
Mavra
Dear Mavra,
After a recent divorce, I moved back to Erie when I retired from my practice of 36 years in Phoenix. Erie has always been where my roots were deeply planted, and it is wonderful to be back with my family and be "where I belong".
I just returned from a three month stay in Costa Rica, where I plan to spend the winter months. Costa Rica is a wonderful place for live or visit, and can really be enriched if you learn to speak Spanish. I will answer any inquiries about Costa Rica from any classmates or old friends.
About the Video Taped Interviews? The video interviews are great, but I only had time to interview about 10 people. Sorry, but I just have been postponing editing the tapes, but God willing and continued good health, I will have the 40th and 45th Class of 52 video tapes available at our 50th reunion. Tapes can be rented FREE from the WARRIOR. (See below.) Ideal for parties and get-togethers with old classmates, or if you missed one of the reunions. Recent videos are not edited. I have to continue telling myself that the newsletter and video tapes are my favorite hobby and I DID volunteer for the job. (I love it!)

It always amazes me how you get your material and put it together for the alumni. Your love for those years really shines through the publication. It also amazes me that you are now BACK in Erie battling the snow and rain.
I retired last March and am in the midst of learning how to retire. It seems that I am busier now than when I was getting paid for getting up in the morning.
I will be back this summer, the third week of July and would love to see some of the old class. I will be staying at my mothers on upper Peach Street across from Wegmans. Her phone is 866-0469.
All the best,
John Mallory (54)
Dear John,
When you get here in July, give me a call. Some of us get together periodically for breakfast at Barneys on East Avenue. Pat Hart is usually available to give us a run down about what is happening back in Erie.

My Two Cents
By Don DiPaolo (54)
To people on The WARRIOR E-mail list.
Dear Warriors,
Once again, I have had many requests for My Two Cents. So here goes
#1. Why is it that any e-mail I send with even the slightest hint of sex, always generates the most response?
#2. I dont like Russian anything. I dont even like Russian Dressing on my salad, or the Russian Tea Room in New York City, but I love all the Russian classmates I had in East High School. Cabelof, Samueloff and so on.
#3. I would give any thing if we could only revisit the Mohican Market on State Street.
#4. Where were you when you saw your first color TV show? For me it was in the old Serafinis Italian Restaurant on 12th Street. Perry Como was on (30 minutes only) in living color. E-mail today, is where color TV was back then.
#5. What was the minimum wage back in the fifties? Ike was in the White House and I dont think he was nipping any interns at the time.
#6. Where has Brigit Bardot gone, and is she still as lovely as I remember?
#7. I have a 1952 Erie Times Newspaper I want to give to the first person who send me 2 new e-mail addresses, and cant find a single taker.

My Two Cents
By Don DiPaolo (54)
Dear Warriors,
This is my last Two Cents until after the Golf Season. Here we go
If you think you can find a good cup of coffee in Erie, "You lose," There is no Starbucks in the Area.
"Count Em" Not one, but two, porno stores on State Street. 11th and about 14th street. You think the guys would at least have the decency to put them on French, or Parade Street. Where there any when we went to school?
Am I the only one to remember being called out of class, and into the auditorium to watch the Holocaust Films?
Here is a challenge for you. Where else in the country can you find a more unique area then Presque Isle? It is just as wonderful today as in the fifties. I think it is still free.
Check out the Erie Area web site by clicking on www.eriepa.com. It is very nice.
Male Eyes Only: The new wonder drug called Viagra is coming to a drug store near you. We will then show the ladies a thing or two.
I have a very clear, March 1998 digital photo of George Grignols home room. It is scary just now much it looks today, as it did back in the 1950s. I will send it to any one who requests seeing it.
See you in the Fall
Your faithful servant
Don DiPaolo
